Update August 5th, 2026:
The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local health partners, have expanded the investigation into the Salmonella Javiana outbreak linked to jalapeño peppers imported from Sinaloa, Mexico and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors.

As of August 5, 2026, 345 people infected with the outbreak strain have been reported across 27 states. Thirty-six people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported. Illnesses began between June 19 and July 20, 2026.

Of the 191 people interviewed, 177 (93%) reported eating at a Mexican-style restaurant before becoming ill, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA, with meal dates ranging from June 14 to July 14, 2026.

FDA traceback investigators identified a common grower in Sinaloa, Mexico supplying Coast Citrus Distributors as the likely source of the outbreak. In response, Coast Citrus Distributors has agreed to recall the remaining implicated fresh jalapeño peppers and is notifying affected customers.

Chipotle began using a different jalapeño supplier on July 20, 2026, while QDOBA stopped serving jalapeños on July 28, 2026. FDA stated that, because both restaurant chains removed the implicated product, it does not consider there to be an ongoing risk to consumers at these establishments related to this outbreak.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Chipotle Mexican Grill has removed jalapeño peppers from its Minnesota locations after a salmonella outbreak sickened 110 people. The outbreak affected several food service retailers across the state.

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, 75 out of 84 people interviewed had eaten at Chipotle between June 14 and July 14, with most cases occurring from June 24 to July 2. Chipotle replaced its jalapeños with those from a different supplier as part of the ongoing investigation and is cooperating with health authorities.

The Food and Drug Administration began a traceback investigation on July 22, reviewing multiple ingredients after a cluster of salmonella cases was identified. Chipotle also started a supply chain review. The FDA will provide further updates as needed.
